On May 20, 1983, researchers Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier identified the cause of AIDS, a serious disease of the immune system: HIV.

In 1987, the first treatment for HIV was approved. In the 20 following years, more than 30 were approved.

Women are 20 times more likely to become infected with HIV virus than men.

85% of HIV infections are transmitted during unprotected sexual intercourse.

In 2013, 35 million people were living with HIV, 19 million did not know they were HIV-positive. 80% of infections occur in 10 countries.
