Karen Donfried, former special assistant to President Obama and former National Intelligence Officer for Europe, tells us about the sharing of interests between the US and Europe and about how this alignment drives common policies. Speaking about the European Union she tells us how an integrated EU would be in the interests of the US, as it «would make Europe itself a more effective and reliable partner on the foreign security policy front».

Karen Donfried was the special assistant to President Obama and senior director for European affairs on the National Security Council at the White House. Previously, she was National Intelligence Officer for Europe at the National Intelligence Council. In 2001 she joined the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), of which she assumed the presidency in April 2014.
